Members of Parliament across party lines criticised comments made by the United States president regarding NATO’s role in Afghanistan during a tense session in the House of Commons on Friday.
Lawmakers described the remarks as dismissive of the contributions made by British and allied forces during the two-decade conflict. Several MPs said the comments undermined the sacrifices of service personnel and risked straining long-standing transatlantic relations.
During the debate, senior government figures reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to NATO and emphasised the alliance’s shared history and strategic importance. Ministers said Britain remains a key partner in collective defence and rejected any suggestion that its role had been overstated or misrepresented.
Opposition MPs urged the government to issue a formal diplomatic response, warning that silence could be interpreted as acceptance. They also called for renewed engagement with allies to reinforce NATO unity at a time of heightened global instability.
Defence officials said UK forces operated under NATO command in Afghanistan and played a central role in training local security forces, humanitarian operations, and counter-terrorism missions. They noted that thousands of British personnel were deployed over the years, with significant loss of life and lasting impacts on veterans and their families.
Outside Parliament, veterans’ organisations expressed anger and disappointment, saying the comments failed to recognise the realities faced by troops on the ground. Several groups called for greater support for former service members dealing with physical and mental health challenges linked to their deployments.
The government said it would continue diplomatic engagement with Washington while focusing on shared security priorities, including support for Ukraine, counter-terrorism cooperation, and defence innovation. Officials stressed that occasional disagreements should not overshadow the depth of the UK–US relationship.
Analysts said the episode highlights the delicate balance UK leaders must strike in maintaining close ties with allies while responding firmly to statements that resonate strongly at home.
