How Much Nicotine Is in Snus?

Snus

One of the big advantages of modern oral nicotine products is the fact that they give you extremely fine-grained control over your nicotine intake. When you use a product like white snus – also known as nicotine pouches – you know exactly how much nicotine you’re consuming with each pouch and can track your total intake throughout the day.

Before you can really start to think about your total nicotine intake, though, you need to understand how much nicotine is in snus – and all brands don’t measure nicotine content in the same way. In this guide, we’ll break it down.

Nicotine Strength of White Snus vs. Tobacco Snus

Before we start, it’s important to understand that “snus” doesn’t mean the same thing in all regions of the world.

Tobacco-Based Snus

Tobacco-based snus was originally developed in Sweden. It’s a pouch that’s held in the mouth, and the pouch contains powdered, pasteurized tobacco. Swedish-style snus still exists, but it’s not the focus of this article because the demand for modern snus has become much higher in most regions.

The nicotine content of tobacco-based snus varies depending on the nicotine content of the tobacco itself and how much tobacco is in the pouch. Traditional snus makers generally don’t disclose exactly how much nicotine is in their products.

Modern Tobacco-Free Snus

Modern tobacco-free snus contains no actual tobacco leaf. Instead, it contains pharmaceutical-grade nicotine, which can be extracted from tobacco or synthesized in a lab. The nicotine is diluted with flavours and plant-based fillers.

Because nicotine is added to modern snus as an ingredient in the overall formulation, it’s easy for manufacturers to know how much nicotine is in their products and to create versions with different strengths.

For the rest of the guide, we’ll refer to modern snus as just “snus.”

How Much Nicotine Is in Snus?

Manufacturers measure the nicotine content of snus in two different ways.

  • Milligrams per gram: This measures the amount of nicotine per gram of powder in the pouch.
  • Milligrams per pouch: This measures the total amount of nicotine per pouch.

In most cases, you can tell what measurement standard a brand uses by looking at the can. It’s important to understand the difference because in some cases, the nicotine strength of snus can look higher than it is. A pouch with a strength measured in milligrams per gram may contain less than a gram of powder.

Low-strength snus typically contains 2-3 mg of nicotine per pouch. High-strength brands typically contain up to 20 mg of nicotine per pouch, although a few brands offer stronger pouches for those who need them.

What’s the Right Nicotine Strength to Choose When Buying Snus?

Snus nicotine strength varies widely because many different types of consumers buy it. Depending on which group you’re in, we’ll provide some suggestions to ensure that your first experience will be a good one.

Vapers

If you’ve already switched from smoking to vaping, you might be interested in snus because you’d like to quit vaping or because you want a nicotine product that you can use where vaping isn’t allowed. For you, the ideal nicotine strength is probably 2-6 mg per pouch because vapers typically consume less nicotine than smokers or oral tobacco users.

Smokers

If you’re a smoker, you might be interested in snus because you’re interested in switching to a tobacco-free alternative. Many people find snus much more satisfying than traditional nicotine replacement products because it tastes better and is available in a wider range of strengths. For you, the ideal nicotine strength is probably 6-9 mg per pouch. You need a higher nicotine strength as a smoker but wouldn’t want to go too high unless you’re an experienced user of oral tobacco products.

Oral Tobacco Users

If you use chewing tobacco or tobacco-based snus, you’re used to using a product that creates a strong burn in the mouth and won’t feel satisfied unless you’re able to recreate that experience. For you, the ideal nicotine strength is probably 9 mg or higher. If you’re a chewing tobacco user, you might want to buy the highest strength you can find because a typical portion of chewing tobacco has a very high nicotine content.

Snus Format Affects Nicotine Absorption

When you buy snus, it’s important to find both the right strength and the right format for your needs. The format refers to the shape the thickness of the pouch, and the most common formats are regular, slim, super slim and mini. It’s important to know what format you’re buying because it affects how much powder is in the pouch.

If the nicotine strength per pouch is the same:

  • A smaller pouch gives you a stronger burning sensation and a faster nicotine buzz. A smaller pouch is also more discreet because it creates less of a noticeable bump under your lip. However, the flavour fades quickly.
  • A larger pouch is best for longer-lasting flavour and slower nicotine release. However, larger pouches can be less discreet than smaller ones.

Because of the difference in how the nicotine is released, you may want to consider reducing your nicotine strength when switching from a larger pouch format to a smaller one.

How to Tell if You’re Using the Wrong Snus Nicotine Strength

When you buy snus for the first time, how can you tell whether the nicotine strength you’ve purchased is the right one for you? Here are some simple pointers.

  • If the strength is too low, it’s easy to tell because you won’t feel satisfied and will want to return to your usual nicotine product – maybe even while the pouch is still in your mouth.
  • If the strength is too high, the pouch will create an unpleasant burn in your mouth and may also give you hiccups. You’ll want to discard the pouch even before the flavour is gone.

If your experience is somewhere between those two extremes, the strength is probably right. It’s normal to feel a strong tingle in the mouth when you use an oral nicotine product for the first time. If the tingle becomes too intense, you can move the pouch to a different section of your mouth.

Don’t forget that when you use snus, where you put the pouch is important. Snus is meant to be placed between your upper lip and gum. You can put the pouch behind your lower lip if you prefer, but that area is closer to your salivary glands. The saliva will cause the nicotine to be released from the pouch more quickly, and that can increase the chance of hiccups.
